Who We Are

History

The Desert Reach program was incorporated in 2003 with the vision of offering positive recreational outlets and building relationships. Youth were welcomed into the program before and after school hours to hang out with adult volunteers playing ping pong and completing homework, participating in field trips, guitar classes, or attending hip-hop and poetry nights. Valuable relationships were formed and youth were offered an alternative to running the streets after school.

In 2004 Desert Reach partnered with Latino Coalition for Faith and Community Initiatives and was rewarded funding for the “Reclamando Nuestro Futuro" (Reclaiming Our Future) project. This project was funded by the Department of Labor. The scope of this project was to serve at-risk and adjudicated youth with job preparation, leadership development, mentoring programs, as well as incorporating a case management component. This was a stepping stone to further Desert Reach’s advancement for growth in offering core service to teens.

Desert Reach expanded its reach to health initiatives that also raised funds for children in the community through chairty runs. The first annual Desert Reach 5k in 2012 raised money for school supplies. The 2nd annual Desert Reach 5k in 2013 raised funds for sports equipment. In 2014 the Desert Reach 5k raised funds and awareness for equipping today's youth to be leaders. Each of these runs involved hundreds of people walking, running and raising money.

From humble beginnings to today, Desert Reach has served over 500 youth. The Desert Reach program has partnered with many agencies such as City of Phoenix, Phoenix Police Department, Maryvale YMCA, Arizona Department of Juvenile Corrections, Maryvale Revitalization Corporation and Southwest Behavioral Health. The vision of Desert Reach remains the same-to build positive relationships-and we have been successful doing so. Youth have matured through our programs from getting their first job, graduating high school, and advancing into college. They have harnessed their true potential of being
